White woods | 白い森

I hope you had a joyous Christmas. Since Christmas day, we've been stuffing ourselves with a lot of food and wine with our friends. To prevent my liver from becoming foie gras, I popped out to the woods for a walk this morning.

It marked the coldest day of this winter yesterday. Everything was frozen in the woods. I'm struck by just how artistic nature is every time I go there.

I wish you all an even happier New Year!

Delicious lamb chops in Whitechapel |

There are as many Indian restaurants in the UK as the stars in the sky. I'd never been hugely disappointed by any of those but hadn't found a super delicious one until I went to this Punjabi restaurant Tayyabs in Whitechapel for lunch the other day.

Especially the lamb chops! They came to our table with a sizzling sound. The very tender meat was nicely flavoured with spice. I grabbed the bone with my hands to finish the meat around the bone! It's interesting this kind of dish is a starter in Punjab.

We chose three different curries with chicken, lamb and dhal (lentils).  They might look greasy but they aren't. All dishes were quite hot with chilli which warmed up my body.

The Tayyabs is located in a small street in Whitechapel. It was buzzy although it was a weekday lunch time. As a big mosque is nearby and a lot of people are in their ethnic costumes, it feels like you're somewhere in south Asia. The restaurant doesn't sell alcohol but you can bring your own bottles. I'll be there with a bottle of beer or two!

Make it Christmassy |

10 days to go before Christmas. To make our cottage Christmassy, I made some decorations from plants in our garden and the woods.

A wreath with wild clematis puff. After I made this, I realized that if I hang it outside the seeds would scatter around and the gardens in our neighbourhood would be covered by wild clematis...so, I hanged it on the kitchen door.

For the front door, I made this wreath with holly from the woods. Love the orangey colour of the berries.

We bought a pot grown tree so that we don't have to get a Christmas tree every year.

Perhaps the highlight of the Christmas is the preparation :-)

Mr. Turner |

Director: Mike Leigh
Writer: Mike Leigh
Stars: Timothy Spall, Dorothy Atkinson, Paul Jesson, Marion Bailey
2014/UK
★★★★☆

J.M.W Turner is surely one of the most respected artists in the UK. There's a contemporary art prize called Turner Prize. MR. TURNER is a biographical film focusing on the kind of person Turner was and depicting the latter half of his life.  Even though it is a long film for two and half hours and nothing dramatic happens, it doesn't feel that long. Turner is played by Timothy Spall who often appears in Mike Leigh films. He was spot on! Turner was born as a son of a barber and became an art master. I went to a Turner exhibition some years ago and found an anecdote of his kind of bullying his fellow painter. What a nasty man...It looks like he wasn't a lovable person. He would paint with massive energy and his confidence about his works almost reached arrogance (he smirked at the paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood artists!). Because of that it was even more miserable that as he grew older no one understood his works. In his later works everything is shapeless. I'd assumed that was the result of his artistic experiment but that was partly because he had bad eye sight. The landscape in the film was as beautiful as the one in Turner's paintings. Incidentally there is an exhibition at Tate Britain called "Late Turner" at the moment (until 25/01/15) which makes the film even more interesting.

Cristmas at Polesden Lacey |

I think English people are super passionate about Christmas, almost obsessed! My husband and I visited Polesden Lacey again to get some hints for Christmas decoration yesterday.

Apparently it took whole staff two weeks to decorate the house. It was surely worth it!

The house is open every weekend until Christmas. The fees of £4 adult, £2 child, £10 family apply including National Trust members. But you're treated with free mulled wine and Dundee cake and there are some workshops.

First sign of winter |

After unusually mild autumn, the temperature started to drop in November and finally we had first proper (?) frost this morning. My husband and I went for the first walk in the woods after a long time to capture the beauty of winter.

Iceland, A Circumnavigation 5 |

It's been a while since I last posted about our Icelandic holiday. This is the final post.

On the day 6, I went to the pharmacy first thing in the morning to get some pain killers and ointment for my husband's twisted ankle (which was actually fractured). We set off to the direction of Reykjavik.

A traditional church built in 1834. We were attacked by heavy snow storm there. I took this photo whilst supporting my husband and suffering from the strong wind and heavy snow!

Hraunfossar. Approximatley 1 Km wide waterfall.

Our original plan for this day was going to Reykjavik but we decided to slow down and stayed in a town called Borgarnes. When we arrived at our hotel  Borgarnes Bed & Breakfast, the landlady on her crutch welcomed us. She showed great sympathy for my husband and gave him a walking stick (he was using a suitcase as his stick...).

Borgarnes Bed & Breakfast

On the day 7, we drove along the sea side road to Reykjavik.

Traditional buildings in the middle of nowhere. Inside was a small cafe where we had lunch. It was so cold that day that I couldn't take off my coat even inside the building. An Icelandic tour guide saw me and gave me a piece of advice; eat a lot of meat to warm you up.

We arrived at  Reykjavik in the early evening. Seven days ago, it felt so tiny as a capital but after having traveled such isolated places it looked shiny. Next day, we made a quick visit to The Blue Lagoon and then flew back to London in the afternoon. Iceland was an ideal destination to enjoy extraordinary experiences. We would drive for hours in whiteout or be very isolated from civilization. People were so kind there and the water was surprisingly tasty. The Icelandic scenery was breathtakingly beautiful and overwhelmingly raw at the same time. I hope that we can visit there again in a different season.

I brought some packets of skyr. According to Wiki it is a kind of cheese. Very similar to Greek yogurt. Yum!

[NTL] Frankenstein | [NTL]

Writer: Nick Dear, based on the novel by Mary Shelley
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Jonny Lee Miller, Naomie Harris, Karl Johnson
Director: Danny Boyle
★★★★★+++

I'd been waiting for this National Theatre Live, Frankenstein! In this play, Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller play Dr. Victor Frankenstein and the Creature alternately each day. The one with Miller as the Creature (version M) was screened first and then after a week Cumberbatch as the Creature (version C).

As for the version M, I felt strong sympathy for the Creature. The play started with the birth of the Creature, struggling to stand up. He was like a new born fawn...Miller's Creature highlighted his innocence and was almost charming, so it didn't make sense to me that Victor was scared of him and ran away. On the other hand in the version C, the Creature was really creepy. It is difficult to put into words but he wasn't humane at all. Because of that, him seeking for love looked even sadder. Victor played by Cumberbatch was full of "I'm genius, I'm God" type of arrogance, but Victor played by Miller seemed an ordinary man. In both versions, I felt that Cumberbatch played something beyond us and Miller was easier to identify with.

The stage with rotating facility and passage through the audience seats which has a hole reminded me of a Kabuki stage. Hundreds of filament bulbs hanging from the ceiling were very effective.

It's amazing that Mary Shelley wrote this universal story at the age of eighteen. As I'd never read it, I got the book the other day. Well, what a long prologue! I'm on the page 21 and no sign of the Creature yet!

Created and Performed by Akram Khan & Israel Galván
Music arranged and performed by David Azurza, Bobote, Christine Leboutte, B C Manjunath, Bernhard Schimpelsberger
★★★★★+++

I went to see the first day of Torobaka at Sadler's Wells. I'm still excited. It was just awesome! For this production, Bangladeshi British Akram Khan and Spanish Israel Galván bring their traditional dances, kathak and flamenco. It wasn't an ethnic exchange. It was more like two people who know what dance is really well, had a conversation through their dance... I was fascinated by their differences. Even when they danced with similar choreography and were in perfect harmony, they were totally different. Akram was soft and Israel was hard. The music with only percussion and singers was fantastic, too. Towards the end of the show, I felt like I was watching a pagan religious ceremony and my soul was taken to the stage.

BFI London Film Festival |

The highlight of the year for film lovers, The London Film Festival was held from the 8th  Oct to the 19th Oct. 248 films were showing at 17 venues. I only had a chance to see 3 films. Not enough at all! The reason I couldn't see as many films as I would've like was not only that I was busy but also that the ticket price which goes up every year put me off a bit. £9 for weekday matinees...would be lovely if they made this around £6. Anyway, I will keep record of the films I saw before I forget.

'71
Director: Yann Demange
Writer: Gregory Burke
Stars: Jack O'Connell, Paul Anderson, Richard Dormer
2014/UK
★★★☆☆

The film is set in 1971, in the middle of the conflict in Northern Ireland. A young British solder Gary is accidentally abandoned by his unit in residential area in Belfast which is now a "battlefield". Being chased by IRA members, Gary is running around the town at night. Not every Catholic resident is a member of IRA, some offer him help. There are undercover agents on both sides...It is so difficult for him to tell who is his enemy and who is not. You see an ordinary pub with people enjoying their pints and then next moment a bomb is set off there. There is no clear borderline between daily life and battlefield. Really scarey. Bouncing footage by a handy camera gives it reality. The film didn't try to convey any political message about the conflict, but I couldn't help thinking about Scotland and admiring its trying to obtain independence by referendum (The situations are very different and there may be no point to compare though).

Still the Water | 2
Director: Naomi Kawase
Writer: Naomi Kawase
Stars: Jun Yoshinaga, Nijirou Murakami, Tetta Sugimoto, Miyuki Matsuda, Makiko Watanabe
2014/Japan = France = Spain
★★☆☆☆

Set in Amami Oshima, a beautiful southern island in Japan, the film Still the Water depicts life, death, and sexuality through 16-year-old girl and boy and adults around them. If you like a sort of films such as The Tree of Life or Beasts of the Southern Wild, this is the film for you. Very beautiful cinematography and fantastic music. The two main actors perform really well (so sweet). I agree with the director's view of life and death, that death is the continuity of life...BUT philosophical messages in the lines sound pretentious or almost patronising.

The Further End Awaits |
 Director: Chiang Hsiu Chiung
Writer: Nako Kakinoki
Stars: Hiromi Nagasaku, Nozomi Sasaki
 2014/Japan
★★★☆☆

During this film, lovely coffee aroma came from the screen which made me crave a good cup of coffee. Misaki goes back to her hometown in Okunoto (an area on the north coast of Japan) and opens a coffee shop with a coffee roaster. Opposite to her coffee shop is a small old hotel where a single mum Eriko lives with her two children. Eriko turns her back on Misaki who suddenly appeared in her neighbourhood but one incident makes them get closer. Misaki is a woman who is strong but sometimes tries hard to hide her emotions. Hiromi Nagasaku was perfect for this role. It's irrelevant but there was a scene in which Misaki received a letter she'd been longing for. When she used scissors to open it, I found it very Japanesey.

Peruvian lunch in Covent Garden |

No doubt one of the things about London is a diversity of cultures with people from all over the world. This also applies to its food, of course. Without having to fly abroad, you can enjoy all sorts of cuisines! The other day, I had a lunch at a Peruvian restaurant in Covent Garden with a friend of mine whom I saw after six years. This newly opened restaurant Lima has another branch in Fitzrobia which has got a Michelin star. There is a lunch/pre-theatre set menu for £17.50 for two course and £19.50 for three course including a glass of wine. We decided to go for the three course one to choose from two starters, three main courses and two desserts, and have different dishes to share.

One of the starters was seared beef with lovely chilli oil. Another starter was salmon ceviche flavoured with lime and chilli.

This main course with beef was a bit like Chinese stir fry with black vinegar sauce. It would have gone really well with rice.
Another main course was pan fried hake with crispy skin. Loved mashed Cuzco corn underneath.

This dessert with sweet potato and shaved ice reminded me of Vietnamese Chè.
At the rim of  the bowl were shiso (A Japanese herb similar to basil) sprouts.

From my impression of Peru like Andes mountains, condors flying in the big sky...I expected the dishes would be something rustic, but they were all beautifully presented and delicately flavoured. Peruvian cuisine is a combination of their native food culture and migrants' food cultures. It makes sense that they use some familiar ingredients for me such as soy sauce and shiso. My friend and I were busy discussing about the dishes and catching up at the same time. Unfortunately we only had two hours which obviously were not enough at all. Hope to see her soon, not after six years!

Sissinghurst Castle |

To enjoy the beautiful Indian summer (which will soon end...), my husband and I visited Sissinghurst Castle. We enjoyed the rich autumnal colours in the themed gardens there.

"Today's special"

Look at the gorgeous borders! It looks like dahlia is a "must have" flower in autumn.

The cottage garden. Full of vivid colours! I hadn't know that the combination of yellow, red and orange could be as stylish like this...

The white garden. Half the garden was undergoing soil preparation.
It would be interesting to create a garden with the same coloured flowers.

These are my favourites. From left; Osteospermum 'Cannington John', Knautia Macedonia Pink Form.

On the way home, we found the sign for game sales. We got some venison and our dinner that evening was venison steak, very tender meat with a bit of iron flavour...yummy! There were some friendly pigs behind this shop. The word "sausages" on the sign concerns me a bit...
