Writer: David Hare
Stars: Carey Mulligan, Bill Nighy, Matthew Beard
Director: Stephen Daldry
★★★★★

My husband and I went to see the play "SKYLIGHT" stared by Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy. First performed in 1995, the themes are just as valid today, in fact the story could be set in any era.

Kyra (Carey Mulligan) is a teacher who lives in a shabby flat in north west London and finds teaching children in a poor area rewarding. One cold winter evening, her former lover Tom (Bill Nighy), who is a successful restauranteur,  visits her unexpectedly. He just lost his wife a year ago and wants to re-kindle their relationship.

The play is set entirely in Kyra's flat (which has gas, electricity, and water!) and depicts a man and a women who desire each other but have different attitudes towards life which create a big gap between them. Loved the script by David Hare. What a thrilling conversation these two actors have!

If you have a partner, you might want to check if you share certain viewpoints with him or her after the show...

Before the theatre, we had dinner at my husband's favourite Turkish restaurant.
The restaurant is situated in Wilton Road, 10 minutes walk from Victoria station.

Very Turkish interior. I want one of those lamps!

We had a big main course, slow roasted lamb shoulder (minimum 2 people).
Very tender meat flavoured with wild thyme, garnished with crunchy salad.

We had Turkish red wine for the first time which was surprisingly (sorry!) lovely.
We didn't have much time on this occasion but would love to try some mezze next time!

A very Japanesy cafe |

A friend of mine took me to a lovely cafe in Marylebone last Sunday (which was a beautifully sunny day!)

The Monocle Cafe is run by a British magazine "Monocle" (they have a cafe in Tokyo as well). Its interior design (by a Japanese designer) and menu made me feel at home (back in Japan). It's interesting to see cafe culture exported to Japan from Europe and then coming back to Europe.

Very refreshing lemonade...

Shrimp katsu sandwich. Delicious with Japanese brown sauce and tartar sauce! The bread was excellent as well.

Voodoo lily |

So this is the flower of the voodoo lily. How bizarre looking! And it smells like rotten meat! A lot of flies were hovering around the flower, attracted by this shocking smell which faded away the following day (pheeew!)

Of Horses and Men | 馬々と人間たち

Director: Benedikt Erlingsson
Writer: Benedikt Erlingsson
Stars: Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson, Charlotte Bøving, Helgi Björnsson
2013/Iceland = Germany
★★★★☆

Set in the horse farming community in Iceland, this film consists of a series of quirky episodes with the bleak Icelandic landscape as the background. My husband and I went to see this film only because we went to Iceland and made friends with Icelandic horses in March, and we loved it.

Each episode begins with a close-up of almost emotional horse's eye. Then the stories about life, sexuality, and death of men and horses are told with a bit of dark humour. Each episode has a surprise and this 80 minute film felt really short.

Icelandic horses are a unique species protected over ten centuries and are good actors indeed! They are somehow comical compared to elegant thoroughbred horses. I've never seen a horse swimming in the sea before. Having said that, the main subject of this film is human beings. There are scenes where they discipline the horses very strictly but they themselves are not disciplined at all...however deep their desires are! (that makes our lives fun though)

Early summer gardening |

Since middle of May, I've been busy gardening. The main task has been to prune early flowering shrubs, as well as deadheading and weeding. As a reminder for the future, the shrubs I've pruned so far are: wisteria (still on going),  viburnum, weigela, mock orange, and ceanothus.

* Edit 1: The shrub I thought viburnum is actually cornus which should be pruned between Feb and March...

For gardening, I find it difficult to follow the agenda of the day's work. I would plan to prune weigela but notice weeds in the border on my way to the shrub. Then I would start pulling them and couldn't stop - and run out of the time..This happens all the time!

We've planted some tomatos, peppers, and chillies in the shed.

We've sowed several kinds of seeds on our vegetable patch where we only have broad beans. The covered area is for eda-mame. It came out but all eaten by slugs ;-( I've sowed them again in the shed. The damned slugs have eaten a bit of burdock root shoots as well. Guess I have to use beer trap..

I've pulled quite a lot of crocosmia which dominated the border. Look at the amount I had to pull! Apparently, one of the prefectures in Japan bans this plant as it's too vigorous.

Roses are starting to bloom. Shame the petals are damaged a bit by rain. the left one smells really nice even before coming out.

From left: diascia, allium, aconitum.

The previous owner of our cottage visited us the other day and he gave us a bit of a garden tour. We learned that the most unusual plant in our garden might be "voodoo lily". This plant was already there when he moved in. I wonder how this Indian origin plant traveled here..

Voodoo lily. Apparently, the flower smells like rotten meat..Well, we'll see.

 Director: Mika Kawase
Stars: Sachio Yoshioka, Denji fukuda
2011/Japan
★★★★☆

I joined a friend of mine to see a documentary film 'MURASAKI' (meaning purple), which is about a historian of dyeing, Mr. Sachio Yoshioka. The venue was a small cinema in the Courthouse Hotel in Soho. It was like a little secret place!

Comfy leather seats!

The film is about Mr. Yoshioka, who's the fifth generation owner of a dyeing factory in Kyoto.  The film depicts his decision not to use chemical dye when he took over the factory, and also features his craftsman Mr. Denji Fukuda, and their challenge to revive the traditional dyeing method that uses only natural dyes. They tackle several difficulties such as technical issues with reproducing ancient colours and patterns by researching old materials and the difficulty arising from the shortage of plants to produce dye. The colours they produce are so deep that I could just look at them hours and hours..

Mr. Yoshioka is involved in the project to revive a traditional theatre called "Gigaku" (which disappeared more than thousand years ago) as a costume adviser. The reproduced costumes are really colourful and funky. Even though a lot of bright colours like red or yellow are used, they are somehow classy.

The cinematography was beautiful, filming work in the factory over four seasons.

His factory has a shop in Kyoto. I'd love to visit when I go back to Japan!

Mr. Yoshioka was there and we had a Q&A session after the film. He brought some threads with him which I just admired.

"Nouvelle" Greek in Notting Hill |

A friend of mine in Japan came over to London with her mum to visit the Chelsea flower show. We met at college near London some years ago and this was the first time we've met since we left college. To celebrate our reunion, I chose the Greek restaurant MAZI in Notting Hill.

Even though it was raining outside, inside the restaurant was very bright with white decor and Greek pictures on the walls.

And the food! Beautifully presented dishes overturned my rustic image of Greek food.

Cool Souvlaki with pork strip in rice paper. A bit like Vietnamese summer rolls.

Tiger Prawns with orzo pasta, Metaxa bisque. This was the star dish of the day! I loved really prawny bisque..

We also shared cheese dip in a jar, Greek salad, and slow cooked lamb shank. Three people are a good number to share a variety of dishes!

Galaktoboureko soaked in sweet syrup with milk custard.

We enjoyed our meal and plenty of girl talk (gossiping about our mutual friends :-D)
