BFI London Film Festival 2015 |

It's been already two months since the London Film Festival which was held between the 7th and 18th October showing 240 films from 72 countries. This year I watched four Japanese films (Happy Hour, Love and Peace, Our Little Sister and An). The London Film Festival has become an opportunity to enjoy the latest Japanese films for me. Here are my notes about the films I saw and I have to give you a spoiler warning.

Happy Hour
Director: HAMAGUCHI Ryusuke
Writers: HAMAGUCHI Ryusuke, NOHARA Tadashi, TAKAHASHI Tomoyuki
Stars: KAWAMURA Rira, KIKUCHI Hazuki, MIHARA Maiko, TANAKA Sachie
2015/Japan
★★★★☆

This film is about four women in their early thirties who live in Kobe. The extraordinary thing about this film is the length of the film which is five hours without an interval. I'd decided to see this one because I was curious about why it is this long. Surprisingly there were quite a few people in the cinema (and a long queue for the loo afterwards).

The film depicts the four women struggling. Maybe because the main actresses were not professional actresses, it felt like a documentary. As I got into their stories, it was as if I myself were a part of their lives. By the end of the film, I felt like they were my friends and wanted to ring them to see how they were doing. Their conversations in western dialect reminded me of my university days in Osaka and made me a bit nostalgic.

Love and Peace
Director/Writer: SONO Shion
Stars: HASEGAWA Hiroki, ASO Kumiko, NISHIDA Toshiyuki
2015/Japan
★★★★☆

I have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of this director SONO Shion but the trailer of this film looked fun, so I decided to see this one. And I'm glad I did!

SUZUKI Ryoichi is an ordinary office worker who once tried to be a rock star. He's bullied in the office and too shy to talk to TERASHIMA Yuko whom he secretly had a feeling. One day, he bought a tiny turtle and named it Pikadon. Since he started living with Pikadon, his life has moved in an unexpected direction. And the story involves mysterious old man who lives underground with abandoned toys which can speak...The synopsis sounds rather childish but I was hugely drawn into the film. And when Pikadon which had been separated from Ryoichi became gigantic like Godzilla and looked for him, tears were rolling down on my cheeks. I still don't know what moved me so much...

Our Little Sister
Director/Writer: KORE-EDA Hirokazu based on the work by YOSHIDA Akimi
Stars: AYASE Haruka, NAGASAWA Masami, Kaho, HIROSE Suzu
2015/Japan
★★★★☆

This film is based on the latest comic by YOSHIDA Akimi. I was a huge fan of her when I was a teenager. Even though this is good enough reason to see this film, the fact that the director is one of my favourite, KORE-EDA Hirokazu made it unmissable.

Set in Kamakura, the film depicts the daily life of three sisters and their half sister who happened to join them. In many scenes these sisters got together at the dinning table which made me a bit of homesick. For Japanese people, sharing a meal with your family is one of the most important things for your family life.

The director came to the cinema and there was Q&A afterwards. It was interesting to listen to how he directed child actors; he didn't give them script instead he gave them the lines verbally on site and explained about the scene they were going to shoot.

An
Director/Writer: KAWASE Naomi
Stars: KIKI Kirin, NAGASE Masatoshi, UCHIDA Kyara
2015/Japan=France=Germany
★★★★★

Sentaro works at the dora-yaki (a kind of Japanese sweets) shop and one day an elderly lady Tokue came to him for a part time job at his shop. He rejected her application but she returned with bean paste she had made. Because that bean paste was very tasty, he decided to employ her. His shop attracted a lot of customers with Tokue's bean paste. But when people found out that she was suffering from leprosy, they stopped coming to Sentaro's shop and Tokue left the shop as well. Together with the teenage girl Wakana who is a regular at his shop, Sentaro visited her at the sanatorium. The film depicts their interactions through four seasons (each season was beautifully filmed). I was touched by Tokue's attitude; she calmly accepted her cruel fate.

Before the film, the actor UCHIDA Kyara who played Wakana was on the stage explaining a bit about the film. According to her, they filmed for 60 hours and edited it into two hours. I think the thick layers of time were in the film as background.

Gourmand holiday in northern Spain 3 |

On the third morning, we moved to Vitoria-Gasteiz, a capital city of the Basque country.

Coach station in Bilbao.

We took a coach from the coach station. Various coach companies operate for different destinations and you have to buy your ticket at the counter of the coach company for your destination...Very complicated. Thanks to J who speaks very fluent Spanish, we had no problem. We arrived at Vitoria 30 minutes earlier (!) than the schedule and were headed to E's flat. E is J's friend from high school in the US. They found out that they both lived in Spain several years ago. I'd be more than happy if it turned out that one of my high school friends was actually living in York or somewhere! It was already a lunch time, so we were off to go "bar hopping".

The first bar E took us was LAS 3BBB LOS HUEVOS ROTOS. My husband and I volunteered to order at the bar counter and ended up ordering many plates of pinxos because we were hungry. We were told that we were supposed to have only one or two pixhos at any one place...Everything was delicious, especially the meatballs were so good that I wanted to have another one (I didn't though).

LAS 3BBB LOS HUEVOS ROTOS

Next stop was a trendy looking bar Toloño. Their pinxos looked beautiful and sophisticated. I was tempted to try a lot of them, but just had one with bacalao which was moist and yummy.

Toloño

A dog sat quietly next to its master who was having fun.

It was a beautiful Saturday and every bar was packed.

I had a pinxho with mock baby eels at the bar whose name I forgot. Baby eels are very precious in the Basque country and mock ones are made from white fish meat. This is actually really good. E gave me a bite of her foie gras ravioli which was lovely with a rich flavour.

And the last bar of the day was Asador Safartoki. There was a posh looking restaurant at the back of the bar. We had a dish of the photo above. The staff instructed us to wait for exactly one minute and eat it in one bite. After a minute, I popped it into my mouth and enjoyed runny egg york from the crispy skin. It went well with the red wine I had but would've gone even better with beer!

Asador Safartoki

<Right> It seems like this snack is the signature dish of this bar.
<Left> Sushi?!

Even though Vitoria is a capital city, it's so small that you can go anywhere on foot in the city centre. After plenty of pinxhos, we walked around the town for exercise and joined the tour to see the cathedral which was under refurbishment.

Then it was a dinner time. We went to this restaurant VINUM only because the restaurant E wanted to took us was full. So it was a second choice but we all loved it and in fact we went back for the lunch the following day.

After sharing some starters, I had sauteed foie gras and mushrooms. The foie gras was almost too light but the mushrooms smelt very autumnal.

For the lunch of the following day, E's two teenage boys joined us. We shared several starters (sauteed squid was phenomenal) and I had tuna which was in season for my main. It was a bit like Japanese "tataki" with a bit of soy sauce. The photos above are Fabada (slow cooked beans and morcilla, chorizo and pork) for my husband and the lamb dish for the younger boy (which was huge!). One of the waitresses in this place was very friendly and convincing, we enjoyed her company as well.

E told us that in Vitoria there is an annual Jazz festival in July. Enjoying a jazz concert with some pinxos and a glass of wine is very appealing!

★★★★☆

In near future, people living in The City are obliged to have their partners and single people are sent to The Hotel where they have to find partners within 45 days otherwise they will be turned into animals of their choices and left in The Woods...The main character of this quirky film David (Colin Farrell) was sent to The Hotel after his wife left him. He was at The Hotel with his brother who turned into a dog some years ago. Under a lot of rules to follow, David tried to find someone but failed tragically and he ran away into The Woods. In The Woods, there was a group of singletons and he joins them. Although members in this group were not allowed to have a relationship with other members, David ironically fell in love with a woman (Rachel Weisz) in the group... This unconvincing story was made convincing by the director (his method reminded me of a Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki; deadpan characters, rather cheesy music, etc). I loved the cinematography which created a world between reality and fantasy.

Gourmand holiday in northern Spain 2 |

After we left Guggennheim Museum, we took 20-minute underground journey to Getxo to see Vizcaya Bridge. This is the world oldest bridge of this kind and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This bridge was designed by Alberto de Palacio who was one of the pupils of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel.

The bridge carries people and vehicles in a hanging gondola. The upper part of the bridge (50m from the ground level) is a walkway for tourists. So we decided to cross this walkway to Portugalete. We bought tickets and a member of staff took us up by a lift.

Tickets, please.

Look at the gaps between the board...it was shaky as well every time the gondola passed.

We took a gondola back to Getxo and had a walk by the beach, then went back to Bilbao.

This graffiti was everywhere in the Basque country.
This is a message for bringing ETA prisoners, who are held in prisons in different parts of the country,
to the Basque country so that their families and friends can visit them.

We went to El Viejo Zortzi for dinner. Inside is divided into a restaurant and a bar and we went to the bar for tapas and wine. Even though we arrived there at early hour (well, 20.30ish), it was packed already. We managed to grab a table and looked at each other; how do we order here? Then a service lady came from the restaurant and took our order. I observed while eating and found that people ordered at the counter. It was kind of her being flexible and making us comfortable!

Iberian salami platter and black pudding (morcilla).

You can't go wrong here whatever you order! I was so busy enjoying my food that I forgot to take photos...I especially loved morcilla which was moist and nicely flavoured and the apple on top was a nice touch.

Gourmand holiday in northern Spain 1 |

My husband and I went to northern Spain for a week last month. We flew to Bilbao and then went on to Vitoria-Gasteiz, La Rioja, Pamplona, and San Sebastian. Our main themes for this holiday were "architecture and food". Their food was sooo good that I wish I had a second house there!

We arrived at Bilbao late at night. What a beautiful airport! Bilbao airport is designed by Santiago Calatrava. We met up with our American friend J who lives in Barcelona at our accommodation. Next morning, we had a riverside walk to Guggennheim Museum.

This elegant bridge in Bilbao city centre is also desgined by Santiago Calatrava.

...And here we are, Guggennheim Museum! The museum designed by Frank Gehry is really grand but somehow blends well with the town scenery.

We had our breakfast in the cafe here. Their croissant was so perfect that French people might get envious...

Hamlet |

 Writer: William Shakespeare
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciarán Hinds, Anastasia Hille, Siân Brooke, Leo Bill
 Director: Lyndsey Turner
★★★★☆

About two weeks ago, my husband and I went to see Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch that has the record for the fastest sold-out play in British theatre history. Because I rarely understand Shakespearean English, I had to compare the scenes with the Japanese script and Japanese version of Hamlet I saw at the Barbican in summer in my head to follow what was going on the stage. I have to admit that I lost my concentration and consciousness several times... Still I enjoyed it a lot. I had only seen Hamlet twice or so and I always got annoyed by his being so indecisive that things got worse and worse. But this time, I fully empathized with him. It's frustrating that I can't put what was different about Cumberbatch into words. He's really a gifted actor. I loved the set as well, the shade of blue they used for the walls and detail of the decor. The set felt so deep that it made me wonder if the stage of the Barbican has been always this big. As for the direction, there were moments I was a bit puzzled. I'd like to check this with someone who knows Shakespeare very well.

After the curtain call, Benedict Cumberbatch made a speech to ask donation for refugees. He quoted a poem by a Somali British poet Warsan Shire which was very moving (I've put the whole poem at the end of this post).

Home, by Warsan Shire

no one leaves home unless
home is the mouth of a shark.

you only run for the border
when you see the whole city
running as well.

your neighbours running faster
than you, the boy you went to school with
who kissed you dizzy behind
the old tin factory is
holding a gun bigger than his body,
you only leave home
when home won't let you stay.

no one would leave home unless home
chased you, fire under feet,
hot blood in your belly.

it's not something you ever thought about
doing, and so when you did -
you carried the anthem under your breath,
waiting until the airport toilet
to tear up the passport and swallow,
each mouthful of paper making it clear that
you would not be going back.

you have to understand,
no one puts their children in a boat
unless the water is safer than the land.

who would choose to spend days
and nights in the stomach of a truck
unless the miles travelled
meant something more than journey.

no one would choose to crawl under fences,
be beaten until your shadow leaves you,
raped, then drowned, forced to the bottom of
the boat because you are darker, be sold,
starved, shot at the border like a sick animal,
be pitied, lose your name, lose your family,
make a refugee camp a home for a year or two or ten,
stripped and searched, find prison everywhere
and if you survive
and you are greeted on the other side
with
go home blacks, refugees
dirty immigrants, asylum seekers
sucking our country dry of milk,
dark, with their hands out
smell strange, savage -
look what they've done to their own countries,
what will they do to ours?

the dirty looks in the street
softer than a limb torn off,
the indignity of everyday life
more tender than fourteen men who
look like your father, between
your legs, insults easier to swallow
than rubble, than your child's body
in pieces - for now, forget about pride
your survival is more important.

i want to go home,
but home is the mouth of a shark
home is the barrel of the gun
and no one would leave home
unless home chased you to the shore
unless home tells you to
leave what you could not behind,
even if it was human.

no one leaves home until home
is a damp voice in your ear saying
leave, run now, i don't know what
i've become.

LightScape: James Turrell at Houghton Hall |

I read a newspaper article about James Turrell exhibition at Houghton Hall some time ago and liked the idea to have an art exhibition in a big estate. So my husband and I went off to Norfolk last weekend.

Super symmetrical.

The Houghton Hall was built in the 18th century for Great Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Turrell's works were exhibited on the ground floor and on the first floor there were the 10 luxurious rooms which Sir Walpole showed off to his guests (no photography inside the house). The current owner Lord Cholmondeley is a contemporary art collector and sculptures and installations by James Turrell and other world renowned artists are displayed in this huge estate. We visited each of them following the map which was a bit like orienteering and fun (and good exercise as well).

It's incredible that an English aristocrat can be so wealthy that he can turn his own estate into an art site! But then he's contributing the society by opening his estate to the public (even though we have to pay the entrance fee).

The highlight of the day was the night illumination of the house which was to start at 18.50. So we arrived there before 16.00 thinking we would have plenty of time. We didn't. The art display was so fascinating that time flied faster than we'd expected. As a result we had only 10 minutes for the walled garden which I had looked forward to...

Anyway, we headed back to the house for the illumination.

Mist at dusk. Magical...

The Hall was decorated with colourful light and the colours changed very slowly and gradually. All the works by Turrell we saw that day, including this night time illumination, used light to stimulate our vision. Using a variety of techniques Turrell awakens aspects of our visual sense which normally lies dormant. LightScape is open until the 24th Oct and you can see the night time illumination on Friday and Saturday evenings. I recommend you to take some blankets with you as it gets really cold (we didn't bring any and were freezing...)

Before Houghton Hall, we stopped at Brancaster.

Norfolk is famous for its crabs and lobsters and at the entrance of the port there was The Crab Hut. I enjoyed their fresh dressed crab. Yum!

Dungeness |

About two weeks ago, My husband and I went to Dungeness, a seaside town in Kent.

There are black cottages dotted around by the beach and amongst them is the Prospect Cottage where an English film director, stage designer, diarist, artist, gardener and author Derek Jarman lived and created his garden.

The beach is really bleak.

It feels like the time has stopped there with abandoned fishing boats, ruined fisherman's cabins... Fascinating as I love ruins!

We drove there with other Citroën enthusiasts to celebrale the 60th anniversary of  Citroën DS.

Dismaland |

My husband and I went to Banksy's Dismaland which is open for five weeks from the 22nd Aug. It was dismal and fun!

Our tickets were for the 11.00 slot but we arrived there around 11.30 following my friend's advice, to avoid a long waiting time. Although there was a long queue, it became swiftly shorter  so we didn't have to wait that long.

Ruined Cinderella castle.

After a thorough security check, we found that Ariel was missing! Bit disappointed but never mind... We started wandering around the bemusement park.

I first bought a program here but it was awkwardlylarge. Should've got it at the end.

Cheesy Hawaiian type music and apathetic announcements over the tannoy were in the background.

Impressive art works inside The Galleries.

Lethargic cast.

While we laughed at the art works with cynicism or satire, we actually became part of the exhibits. I don't know if those works are "great art" which will last for hundreds of years, but I simply admired the power of the art.

After Dismaland, we went down to the Weston beach and the brown dismal sea was waiting for us...

A familiar face at the window!
