Japan reconstructed |

I had lunch at Yashin Ocean House the other day. As  you can see in the photo above, this restaurant is in a one-story building which is a bit unusual.

I was particularly looking forward to Aburi Salmon Ikura Don (seared salmon sashimi and ikura roe on rice) in their lunch menu. A salad and soup came first as starters. The soup in a coffee cup is Miso Cappuccino, miso soup with ginger tofu foam. If you expect Japanese miso soup you might get shocked a little bit by this soup, but I took it as a kind of soup and it was lovely.

And this is the main course Aburi Salmon Ikura Don. Look how shiny the salmon roe (ikura) is! The seared salmon sashimi was very fresh. I liked the vinegary jelly on top of the rice. 16GBP for this dish is very reasonable. By the way, a white thing on top of salmon is pickled ginger. I had a big bite thinking that would be pickled turnip or something and it was a bit of a shock.

I think their food is reconstructed version of Japanese food. Their trendy decor and BGM are not my sort of things but if I'm in the area at lunch time, I'll go there to have another rice bowl!

★★★☆☆

After a pleasant lunch, I walked down to the Royal Albert Hall to see the opera "Madam Butterfly". I read the story beforehand and found it horrible. I know it's nonsense to talk about the story which was written more than hundred years ago with my own 21st century values, but...

An American officer Lieutenant Pinkerton was in Nagasaki, Japan and got married to a young Japanese geisha girl Cio Cio san. She was only fifteen then. After a short marriage, he went back to the US and did not come back for three years. Cio Cio san trusted her husband and longed for his return with their son who was born three years previously. But Pinkerton in fact got married in the US and didn't have the guts to tell her the truth...what a bastard! No sign of good faith. Because the audience was angry with him, the poor singer who played Pinkerton got booed at the curtain call. The story was set in Japan and the tiny things which were not authentic (such as the way they put on their kimonos or the timing of their bows) bothered me, so I decided to see it as a reconstructed Japanesey place. Yet the performance was very good, especially I adored the voice of Cio Cio san which was like melted cheese on a piece of pizza.
