Bulgaria in spring, day 7 Veliko Tarnovo |

We left Black Sea coastal area in the morning of day seven, and headed to Veliko Tarnovo, a historic city which was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1187 - 1393). It was a scenic city where houses are on hills divided by a river. After checking in the hotel, we had a walk.

My husband found a sign for The House with The Monkey. According to the description, this house was built by some famous architect.

Is this statue of a sulky child a monkey?

We met a local young man in a smart linen jacket in front of this house. He said hello and introduced himself and then tried to tell us something. It turned out that he asked for money for bread. We told him that he didn't look like someone who needs help. I'd never seen such a stylish beggar...

A lot of eye-catching graffiti.

I hadn't expected to see a Japanese cultural centre here! Is that because a famous sumo wrestler is from this city?
I wonder what sort of activities they have...

At the end of our walk, we went up Trapezitsa. The whole hill was a palace during the Second Bulgarian Empire.

Looking down towards the old town from the hill.

Our holiday was nearly at an end. We headed off to our starting point Sofia the following morning.

The Look of Silence |

Director: Joshua Oppenheimer
2014/Denmark = Finland = Indonesia = Norway = UK
★★★★★

In 1965, in Indonesia there was a military coup followed by an act of genocide under the pretext of getting rid of the communists. The military didn't directly kill people but provided arms to collaborators and made them kill their neighbours. Because the perpetrators are still in power, the offenders are considered to be heroes and are protected by the government, having comfortable lives. The previous film directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, The Act of Killing, depicted the madness of human beings using the most unusual method in which he let the leaders of a killing squad make a film about the genocide. This film tells a story from victim's view point.

Adi was born after his brother was killed in 1965. After having seen a video by the director in which those offenders proudly talk about how they killed victims, he decided to go see them. It is shocking that both offenders and victims still live in the same village and victims are scared of those who killed their loved ones. Because Adi is an optician, he offers a free eye check to see them. While he is checking their eyesight, they answer his questions about the genocide without alarm. Once they knew Adi was actually a brother of a man they killed, their attitude changed. The camera follows the expressions of both Adi and the offenders very closely. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen. Adi just wanted a sincere apology from the offenders but none of them were prepared to give one. They all tried to justify what they did or blame the authorities. Although we can clearly see the guilt in their faces.

There are so many examples of tragedies in our history caused by people following what the authorities tell them to do without thinking about it for themselves. This incident falls into this category but the killers have been in power for 50 years. It is as if they are legitimate because they won. On the credits, many names were "Anonymous", which was very chilling.

Bulgaria in spring, day 6 Nesebar |

Nesebar is surrounded by an old wall and connected to the mainland by a narrow road (this side is Nesebar).

It's been a while since I last posted about my holiday in Bulgaria. There is a little bit more that I want to share.

Now, after leaving a dodgy castle, we drove north to our next destination Nesebar. It is so small that you can walk around the town in half an hour. There are quite a few old churches in this old town.

This is St. Stephen Church.

Impressive frescoes.

Eager to know the story behind this painting.

The oldest church in Nesebar called St. Sofia Church which was built in the late fifth century to the early sixth century. Now it is a ruin but makes a good playground for children.

Nesebar is placed on a small peninsula sticking out to the Black Sea. The beach above looks like a pebble beach but actually consists of  mussel shells.

This restaurant was recommended by a receptionist in our hotel. According to her, the best restaurant in town. I loved sardine-like local fish there called blue fish which was very fresh! I noticed most restaurants in Bulgaria had big screen TVs and they were always on. It would always be a cookery channel which would often be a British program. So we had Bulgarian meal every day watching Heston Blumenthal or Jamie Oliver (and admiring what they are cooking).

Wild Tales |

Director/Writer:  Damián Szifrón
Stars:  Darío Grandinetti, María Marull, Mónica Villa, Ricardo Darín
2014/Argentina = Spain
★★★★☆

This is an Argentinian black comedy film consisting of six short stories. I really couldn't tell how each story would end and how far the story would go. It wasn't a lough out loud comedy, but I enjoyed being stunned. My favourite story was the fourth one in which the main character was suffering from social corruption and fought back in an unexpected way. The producer of the film is Pedro Armodovar. The very melodramatic music is his influence perhaps?

Ninagawa Company | NINAGAWA祭

I saw the two Ninagawa Company plays at the Barbican Theatre.

Hamlet |

 Writer: William Shakespeare
Stars: FUJIWARA Tatsuya, MITSUSHIMA Hikari, OHORI Ran, HIRA Mikijiro, MITSUSHIMA Shinnosuke, YOKOTA Eiji, UCHIDA Kenshi, TAKAO Taka
Director: NINAGAWA Yukio
★★★☆☆

Set in a slum quarter in late 19th century Japan (it was when Shakespeare was first introduced to Japan), Hamlet was played by young yet experienced FUJIWARA Tatsuya. This was my first Hamlet and I have to say, how indecisive he is! Whilst he distresses himself endlessly, things get increasingly worse and almost everybody dies in the end...The direction emphasized Japanese culture. We saw Kabuki for the play within a play. I was impressed how fit HIRA Mikijiro is (he is 81 years old!)

Kafka on the Shore |

Writer: Frank Galati based on the work by MURAKAMI Haruki
Stars: MIYAZAWA Rie, FUJIKI Naohito, KIBA Katsumi, FURUHATA Nino, SUZUKI Anne, KAKIZAWA Hayato, TAKAHASHI Tsuitomu, TORIYAMA Masakatsu, SHINKAWA Masato
Director: NINAGAWA Yukio
★★★★★

As a big fan of Murakami, I was both curious and anxious about a dramatization of Kafka on the Shore. Curious about how they can tell this complicated story, which involves different times and places, on the stage. Anxious about the possibility that this fantastic book might be ruined. It turned out that I didn't have to worry at all. They recreated Murakami world on the stage successfully! The casting was spot on, especially Nakata played by KIBA Katsumi and Sakura played by Suzuki Anne who were both exactly how I imagined when I read the book.

The stage design was very clever to show different scenes seamlessly. The stage assistants did a really good job.

I was moved by the  emotions delivered by subtle acting by MIYAZAWA Rie and adored her beauty.

Only criticism is that Nakata passed away rather too quickly. Maybe I felt that way because he is my favourite character.

I'd love to see this play again and again!
