Dismaland |

My husband and I went to Banksy's Dismaland which is open for five weeks from the 22nd Aug. It was dismal and fun!

Our tickets were for the 11.00 slot but we arrived there around 11.30 following my friend's advice, to avoid a long waiting time. Although there was a long queue, it became swiftly shorter  so we didn't have to wait that long.

Ruined Cinderella castle.

After a thorough security check, we found that Ariel was missing! Bit disappointed but never mind... We started wandering around the bemusement park.

I first bought a program here but it was awkwardlylarge. Should've got it at the end.

Cheesy Hawaiian type music and apathetic announcements over the tannoy were in the background.

Impressive art works inside The Galleries.

Lethargic cast.

While we laughed at the art works with cynicism or satire, we actually became part of the exhibits. I don't know if those works are "great art" which will last for hundreds of years, but I simply admired the power of the art.

After Dismaland, we went down to the Weston beach and the brown dismal sea was waiting for us...

Hot days in Berlin 2 |

To be honest with you, I hadn't expected that the food in Germany would be any good (sorry!), but I actually enjoyed it a lot.

This is the Japanese restaurant ULA where we had our first lunch. Although my friend wasn't really happy about this choice as she came from Japan, I insisted we should have nice Japanese food. This restaurant offers brunch buffet on Sundays (and it was Sunday). We arrived there when they were about to close. We must have looked desperate (we were starving!), the chef kindly let us in.

We enjoyed a big range of Japanese dishes, rice, miso soup and even sushi. Loved matcha cheese cake!

We found this German restaurant in Japanese guide book. They offered a rather limited menu but everything was delicious.

Their signature dish was schnitzel. You can choose the size of your schnitzel and I chose small which was quite big enough. The schnitzel was golden and crispy and the side salad had lots of fresh vegetables and herbs. Yum! I enjoyed a glass of Riesling as well.

In Germany, restaurants are not allowed to include service charge in the bill. So we got a lot of smiley faces on our bills.

One day, we went to this market, Marheineke Markthalle, for lunch. There are plenty of international food stalls there alongside the fresh food stalls. We got an outside table and there were a lot of people who possibly worked nearby enjoying their lunch break.

Although from a stall we were given a porcelain plate, knife and fork!

I chose Currywurst, Berliners' soul food. I'd thought it would be a sausage with curry sauce but it was with ketchup and curry powder.

This was the lunch for another day. Pastrami sandwich from a NY styled deli. Look, it's huge! I just managed to finish one of these...

This stylishly decorated deli is located inside the first Jewish girls' school in Mitte. This building was used as a military hospital during the war and then as a grammar school. After that it was empty for decades and now it is a cultural facility with some art galleries. The building itself and its decoration are worth seeing.

There is a posh restaurant as well. I like the use of the green colour.

Director: Andrew Haigh
Writer: David Constantine (short story), Andrew Haigh (adaptation)
Stars:  Charlotte Rampling, Tom Courtenay
2015/UK
★★★★★

The two leading actors in this film were the real stars with their subtle performance which made me imagine what their long marriage was like.

Kate and Geoff live in the countryside in Norfolk. One Monday morning, which is five days before their 45th anniversary do, Geoff receives an unexpected letter. The film 45 YEARS depicts their days up to the party in which they are emotionally uncomfortable but calmly manage their daily routines.

Well, the following could be a big spoiler, so if you think about going see this film please close the window now...

Right. The letter was from German Authority and told that Geoff's ex-girlfriend Katya's body was found in The Swiss Alps (and her body was perfectly preserved). Katya slipped into an Alpine crevasse 50 years ago, before he met Kate. Geoff is drawn back to the past and sneaks out of the bed in the middle of the night to look for the old photos in the attic. Meanwhile Kate, who has rarely heard about Katya, tries to be calm but we can see she gets anxious through her eyes. And she went to the attic to see the slides of  Katya and knew what she was supposed not to know...It wasn't suspenseful nor melodramatic which I liked.

It's just occurred to me that this story would be completely different if Kate and Geoff were reversed (i.e. what if it was Kate who lost her boyfriend in the past...). Even though a separation by death is different from a usual break up, this past might be overwritten by their 45 year marraige and become the complete past?

Anyway, at the party, Geoff makes a very emotional speech. The "I love you" from Geoff was the most moving "I love you" I'd ever heard in any films. And that Kate's indescribable expression at the end of the film! That ending will become history.

Hot days in Berlin 1 |

In August, one of my best friends and her family in Japan came to London again and we spent five days in Berlin. London already felt like autumn but we had proper summer in Berlin with over 30 degrees Celsius every day. It was our first visit there, so we went to some obvious places. Our first destination was the Museum Island. We started with the Pergamon Museum. I bought a museum pass for 24 euros. With this pass, you can enter almost all museums and art galleries in Berlin for three days.

This was the only place we had to queue. The sign said that the waiting time was one hour but it was actually 30 to 40 minutes.

In this museum, some antiquities from ancient Greece, Rome, and Middle East were reconstructed and it made me feel like visiting archaeological site one after another. It was a pity that we couldn't see the Pergamon Aler because of the refurbishment (it is closed until 2020). But there was plenty of  ancient art to enjoy.

Because they let only the limited number of people get in the museum, we didn't have to see the display in between people's heads. The lunch time came rather quickly and we had a break at a nearby cafe.

Local beer which reminded me of Japanese beer.

In the afternoon we moved on to the New Museum where you can meet the most beautiful woman in Berlin, Nefertiti.

The Golden Hat found in South Germany. Shiny!

Nefertiti was soooo beautiful (photography is prohibited). She was in this mysterious room...

Before going back to the hotel, I popped in a cafe for a quick break. This iced latte I had in this cafe was the best coffee I had in Berlin. The cafe is situated between the Museum Island and the nearest underground station. They serve light meals such as salad. An useful address to know.
