LightScape: James Turrell at Houghton Hall |

I read a newspaper article about James Turrell exhibition at Houghton Hall some time ago and liked the idea to have an art exhibition in a big estate. So my husband and I went off to Norfolk last weekend.

Super symmetrical.

The Houghton Hall was built in the 18th century for Great Britain’s first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Turrell's works were exhibited on the ground floor and on the first floor there were the 10 luxurious rooms which Sir Walpole showed off to his guests (no photography inside the house). The current owner Lord Cholmondeley is a contemporary art collector and sculptures and installations by James Turrell and other world renowned artists are displayed in this huge estate. We visited each of them following the map which was a bit like orienteering and fun (and good exercise as well).

It's incredible that an English aristocrat can be so wealthy that he can turn his own estate into an art site! But then he's contributing the society by opening his estate to the public (even though we have to pay the entrance fee).

The highlight of the day was the night illumination of the house which was to start at 18.50. So we arrived there before 16.00 thinking we would have plenty of time. We didn't. The art display was so fascinating that time flied faster than we'd expected. As a result we had only 10 minutes for the walled garden which I had looked forward to...

Anyway, we headed back to the house for the illumination.

Mist at dusk. Magical...

The Hall was decorated with colourful light and the colours changed very slowly and gradually. All the works by Turrell we saw that day, including this night time illumination, used light to stimulate our vision. Using a variety of techniques Turrell awakens aspects of our visual sense which normally lies dormant. LightScape is open until the 24th Oct and you can see the night time illumination on Friday and Saturday evenings. I recommend you to take some blankets with you as it gets really cold (we didn't bring any and were freezing...)

Before Houghton Hall, we stopped at Brancaster.

Norfolk is famous for its crabs and lobsters and at the entrance of the port there was The Crab Hut. I enjoyed their fresh dressed crab. Yum!

Dungeness |

About two weeks ago, My husband and I went to Dungeness, a seaside town in Kent.

There are black cottages dotted around by the beach and amongst them is the Prospect Cottage where an English film director, stage designer, diarist, artist, gardener and author Derek Jarman lived and created his garden.

The beach is really bleak.

It feels like the time has stopped there with abandoned fishing boats, ruined fisherman's cabins... Fascinating as I love ruins!

We drove there with other Citroën enthusiasts to celebrale the 60th anniversary of  Citroën DS.
